American Hydrangea Society April 2022 Meeting

AHS is returning to the Atlanta History Center (AHC), for our Monday, April 25, 2022 meeting. Our speaker will be longtime AHS friend, Dr. Michael Dirr, whose topic is Adventures in Hydrangea Breeding: 40-years later and still chasing the dream. 

Bachelor and Master’s, Horticulture, The Ohio State University; Ph.D., Plant Physiology, the University Of Massachusetts; Assistant and Associate Professor, University of Illinois; Professor, now Emeritus, the University of Georgia; Director of the University’s Botanical Garden; taught Landscape Plant Taxonomy, Propagation, and Introductory Horticulture; received the major college and university teaching awards; mentored and advised undergraduate, masters and Ph.D. students; published 50 scientific articles, more than 300 popular and trade articles, and 11 books, including the Manual Of Woody Landscape Plants, 6th Edition, the major teaching and nursery reference tome in the U.S.; Dirr’s Encyclopedia Of Trees And Shrubs (2011) includes 3,600 photos and textual descriptions; The Tree Book, from Timber Press; and the his most recent book The Hydrangea Book: The Authoritative Guide

Introduced 200 trees and shrubs into commerce with 29 patents granted during the Georgia tenure; received the Inventor of the Year Award from the UGA Research Foundation in 2009; Fellow, National Academy of Inventor, 2015 (first ornamental plant breeder ever inducted); started a plant breeding company with two partners in 2006 and sold it to Bailey Nursery, St. Paul, MN in 2015 with 61 patented plants; a new book completed The Hydrangea Book: The Authoritative Guide; enjoy noble trees, tennis, hiking, gardening and family; established in 2018 a hydrangea collection to include as many of the new introductions as obtainable as well as the best of the legacy/heirloom cultivars; breeding plants (primarily hydrangeas). Life is Great!

Do you need help identifying a hydrangea in your garden? Dr. Dirr will be discussing his new hydrangea book at the April 25, 2022 AHS meeting at the Atlanta History Center. If you would like to order your own copy of his book, we are asking everyone to preorder and prepay for the book(s) using this form. Books MUST be picked up at the April meeting. The preorder time frame closes on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at midnight. Both hardcover and soft cover books are available.
