CAPT Fullerton was born January 2, 1934 in Riverdale, Georgia. He graduated from Jonesboro High School in May, 1950. In 1952 Captain Fullerton enlisted in the US Navy. He was commissioned as an Ensign on 17 April 1956 and awarded the gold wings of a Naval Aviator, Captain Fullerton then served in a variety of assignments in Virginia,Florida, Hawaii and California prior to his posting in April 1968 to Attack Squadron 93 on board the USS Bonhomme Richard, an aircraft carrier on station off the coast of North Vietnam.

On 27 July 1968, then Lieutenant Commander, Fullerton launched his A4F “Skyhawk” attack aircraft as the flight leader of a two-plane section on a night road reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam.

As the flight crossed the coastline, LCDR Fullerton had his wingman placed in a one-to-two mile trail position 2000 feet above him. Three to four minutes after crossing the coastline, LCDR Fullerton spotted a series of lights on the ground and, assessing them to be trucks, he initiated his bomb run. The wingman saw two bombs detonate followed by a secondary explosion. After the wingman completed his bomb run he attempted to contact LCDR Fullerton without success. Repetitive searches of the area were unsuccessful in finding LCDR Fullerton or his aircraft and LCDR Fullerton was declared Missing in Action. He continued receiving promotions while classified as Missing in Action.

He was not among the POW’s released in 1978 and his status was changed to Killed in Action.

Captain Fullerton’s patriotism, selflessness, strength of character and heroism reflects positively on his family and truly represents the finest traditions of the United States of America, the US Navy and his home State of Georgia. He was 24 years old, and had been in-country for 165 days.
For his courage and selflessness he was posthumously awarded The Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart, reflecting positively on his family, the U.S. Army and the United States of America.
