About the Lecture
As Americans relaunched their federal government in the 1790s, they took the unusual step of building an entirely new city to serve as the nation's capital. In dialogue with architects such as Pierre Charles L'Enfant and Andrew Ellicott, George Washington ushered into creation an urban space meant to display the nation's ideals. From its inception, however, the District of Columbia was a contested space in which politicians debated the architectural choices giving shape to the city.
