On Thursday, June 26th, 7:30pm-9:30 pm, Comedy and Conversations returns! This is a program created by Munir Meghjani and David Perdue (not that one) that uses humor to shine a light on serious or under-explored topics. They recruit talented local comedians and subject matter experts to share their knowledge with you—and maybe make you laugh along the way.
Atlanta History Center is partnering with the program to host a night on the women’s suffrage movement in Georgia. We will hear from some funny comedians, discuss what you were (or weren’t!) taught in school, and the successes and failures of the fight for the right to vote.
Meet the Experts
Robin Morris is Associate Professor and Chair of History at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia where she teaches courses in modern US history, Southern history, and public history. She holds a PhD in History from Yale University, an MA in Southern Studies from University of Mississippi, and a BA from Queens University of Charlotte. She is an Atlanta area native and attended Kindergarten through 12thgrade in DeKalb County Public Schools.
Morris authored Goldwater Girls to Reagan Women: Gender, Georgia, and the Growth of the New Right with University of Georgia Press in 2022. The book traces women’s political activism from the foundation of the Georgia Federation of Republican Women in the 1950s through the defeat of the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1980s.
She worked with a committee from Antioch AME Church and a team from University of West Georgia to create a digital archive of the first African American church in Decatur, GA. The site is at www.antiochamehistory.org and participants co-authored an article about the community history process in Digital Community Engagement: Partnering Communities with the Academy on University of Cincinnati Press in 2020.
Prior to graduate study, Morris was an educator at the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte, North Carolina and a middle school social studies teacher in Tunica, Mississippi.
Jessica VanLanduyt is Senior Director of Experiences and Engagement at Historic Oakland Foundation, where she leads strategic initiatives to deepen community impact and enhance visitor experiences at Atlanta's historic Oakland Cemetery. She holds a Master of Heritage Preservation with a concentration in Public History from Georgia State University and serves as part-time faculty in the History Department at Georgia Gwinnett College. An experienced public historian and curator, VanLanduyt served as Lead Curator of Any Great Change: The Centennial of the 19th Amendment, an exhibition exploring the legacy and continuing impact of the women’s suffrage movement.
This program is part of Atlanta History Center’s celebration of the Civic Season, a nationwide initiative encouraging historically informed civic participation through a two-week activation between Juneteenth and July 4th.
