Urban History Collection

The Urban History Collection documents life in the twenty-eight-county metropolitan Atlanta area in the context of Georgia and the South. The collection reflects commercial and technological innovations and developments that shaped the city and the region through transportation, business, communications, sports, entertainment and culture, and architecture. Community life is represented by artifacts from organizational, educational, religious, and governmental institutions. The collection documents conflict and change in the region and contains artifacts that address issues of slavery, segregation, race, the Civil Rights Movement, ethnicity and changing ethnic demographics, women’s suffrage and gender, and recent human rights advances in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community in Atlanta. As a result, the collection recognizes the stories of the variety of people who created and continue to impact the history of the city and region.
