Southern Architecture, Decorative Arts, & Design

The collection features two rare book libraries assembled individually by Philip Trammell Shutze and Harvey M. Smith Jr. With more than 3,300 contemporary and rare book volumes as well as manuscripts, photography, and graphic collections, the Kenan Research Center offers extensive research opportunities in the areas of southern architecture, decorative arts, and design. 

Secondary and primary sources are augmented by one of the Southeast's largest collections of architectural drawings. Including blueprints, floor plans, schematics and elevations, the drawings cover more than 5,000 individual jobs. Collection items include both the work of architectural firms and independent architects and represent plans for residential, commercial, educational, and religious structures. Holdings include:
