Programs & Festivals
Spend the day traveling through time as you learn about wars from Revolutionary to current conflicts. Throughout the day, speak with veterans who share personal stories and memorabilia from wartime, interact with living history interpreters representing various wars, encounter a Civil War encampment, see a display of military vehicles, listen to lectures from guest speakers, view related exhibitions, share your families’ story of service with StoryCorps at the Atlanta History Center, explore the new Veterans Park, and children enjoy a variety of kid-friendly activities.
HIGHLIGHTS: Featured speaker, Michael N. Henderson, Lt. Commander, U.S. Navy, discusses his background as the first African American in the state of Georgia to be inducted into the National Society Sons of the American Revolution and how genealogy helped him to trace his family’s military history Phil Nordyke discusses the 82nd Airborne Division with emphasis on the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment as portrayed in his book, Put Us Down in Hell - The Combat History of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in World War II Engage with living history interpreters representing wars from Revolutionary to current conflicts Meet veterans from various wars who share their personal stories of tragedy and triumph Encounter the past during a Civil War encampment at Smith Family Farm View a display of WWII vehicles Kid-friendly crafts and role-play activities Explore the Atlanta History Center’s new Veterans Park Self-guided and audio tours of the exhibition, Turning Point: The American Civil War Self-guided tours of the exhibition, Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: How the Word is Passed Down StoryCorps at the Atlanta History Center invites service families to share their stories

Sunday, June 16, 2013 This program is presented in conjunction with Bank of America Free Admission Weekends. On the third weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each month, February – June 2013, ALL guests receive FREE admission to the Atlanta History Center to see Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: How the Word is Passed Down. This program is free to members; included in the cost of general admission for nonmembers.
