Hands-On History

Atlanta History Center outreach educators provide hands-on history for your classroom by bringing “please touch” reproduction artifacts, photographs, maps, and clothing to schools. Presentations are 30-45 minutes and are available for pre-K through grade 12 classrooms. Each presentation is keyed to Georgia GPS objectives and includes a presentation by an outreach teacher, a selection of artifacts for students to explore, and printed materials for classroom use.

Single classroom visits for schools outside the Fulton County School System are $75. Each additional class is $35. Outreach presentations are also available for assemblies, full day programs, and special events for an additional cost. A mileage fee is charged for visits.

Please reserve outreach visits at least three weeks in advance. For more information, or to schedule an outreach visit, please call 404.814.2060 or email

Who Was Here First?
Native American culture in the Southeast with reproduction artifacts, maps, music, and storytelling.

Colonial Life
A look at clothing, culture, and communities in the years before the American Revolution.

Pioneer Communities
Investigate the daily life of farm children, with cooking tools, textiles, early school books, and toys.  Younger students enjoy a "Sheep to Shawl" lesson on wool and spinning wheels.

Civil War
Causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War are illustrated by unpacking a haversack, hearing the words of Atlanta children who lived through the war, and working with photographs from the war.

Western Expansion
Investigate the people, cultures and documents that chronicle our nation's movement toward the Pacific Coast. Students examine conflict and change in the West during the years from the Louisiana Purchase through the establishment of railroads and cattle drives.

World War I and World War II
Hear the words of Atlanta veterans, look at life on the homefront with hands-on rationing activities, and try on uniforms.  Music, video, and magazines tell the story of American's great 20th-century wars.

Civil Rights
Hear the voices of Civil Rights leaders and see primary resources from the struggle for legal and social equality.
