The Atlanta History Center offers a variety of workshops to help patrons use the Kenan Research Center's resources and make family research easy and enjoyable. In his moving historical memoir, My Father’s Name: A Black Virginia Family After the Civil War, Dr. Lawrence Jackson recounts his family history in Virginia, recalling both the horror of slavery and the later struggles of postbellum freedom.

Dr. Jackson will discuss the detailed genealogical research that enabled him to trace his family history to his grandfather’s grandfather, a man who was born or sold into slavery, but was able to purchase forty acres of land after Federal troops left the South in 1877.
