Fridays in February Celebrate Black History Month at the Atlanta History Center. Each Friday, students experience African American history, culture, and achievements during four historic time periods. February 3 February 10 February 17 February 24 These programs include tours of History Center exhibitions, live performances, living history interpreters, and thought-provoking activities for students. In support of Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment, the last two Fridays, February 17 and 24, include a living history performance presenting one of the influential African Americans featured in the exhibition. Guided tours of the exhibition and related activities celebrate the Apollo Theater and its legacy. Admission is $7 per student; one adult is admitted free for every five students; Title I schools receive a discount rate of $4 per student. Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment, October 8, 2011 - March 4, 2012 Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment examines the rich history and cultural significance of the legendary Harlem theater, tracing the story from its origins as a segregated burlesque hall to its starring role at the epicenter of African American entertainment and American popular culture. The Apollo was one of the first theaters in New York and the nation to fully integrate, welcoming traditionally African American, Hispanic, and local immigrant populations in the audience, as well as headlining uniquely talented entertainers who found it difficult to gain entrance to other venues of similar size and resources. |
