With Malice Towards None: Abraham Lincoln Exhibit Opening Day Celebration

Help us welcome Abraham Lincoln to Atlanta during a day of fun-filled activities designed for the whole family!

In celebration of the opening of With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition, see Lincoln come to life through living history performances, enjoy storytelling, hear excerpts of some of Lincoln’s most popular speeches, and experience musical styles that were prominent during this time.  A variety of hands-on activities and arts and crafts provide younger visitors with a broader understanding of Abraham Lincoln’s life and the times during which he lived.

Scheduled Activities:

Songs and Stories of the Civil War
Bobby Horton
Reeder Amphitheater • Noon, 3:00 PM

Dressed as a 19th-century performer using period musical instruments, Bobby explores the stories of both the North and South through the music they loved.  Each song is placed in context with historical background and portrays the struggles, hopes, and fears of Americans during the long and bloody conflict.

Explore the beginning of our nation’s Civil War through a two-actor performance that portrays the lives, stories, and experiences of individuals from both the North and South.  Based on diaries, letters, and other true accounts, the first battle of the war comes to life with characters that include Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, General Irvin McDowell, Varina Davis, Rose Greenhow, Union and Confederate soldiers, and their families.

The 1860s Civilian Society of Georgia is a family-oriented group of gentlemen, ladies, and children dedicated to vintage dance and to creating refined citizen impressions in the world of mid-1800s living history.

Seeking something fun and engaging for the entire family? Look no further, the Atlanta History Center has something special planned for you!

As part of the History Center’s ongoing Civil War to Civil Rights campaign, Family Fundays will occur every Saturday during the run of With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition (September 4 – November 7, 2010).

During Family Fundays, the Atlanta History Center comes alive with activities and demonstrations, tours of exhibitions, special presentations by experts and living history interpreters, and educational kid-friendly crafts all focused on Lincoln, life during the 19th century, the Civil War, and its impact.

GrandCamp Adventures Presents Grandparents Day!

Here we go! A fun-filled day for families, grandparents, and kids!

GrandCamp Adventures is hosting a day of special activities from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Atlanta History Center to make this year’s Grandparent’s Day, Sunday, September 12th, something to remember. The Atlanta History Center is offering one free youth ticket for every paid adult so everyone can come and participate in this wonderful event.

GrandCamp Adventures is hosting fun activities especially created for grandparents and grandkids:

  • Family Treasure Hunt: Discover hidden clues and treasures throughout the Atlanta History Center’s museums, historic houses and gardens.
  • “Here We Go!” Storytelling: Atlanta’s renowned actor and storyteller, Rob Cleveland introduces GrandCamp Adventures’ storybook Here We Go!  Help Grammie, Papa and the grandkids use a quirky magic compass to find their lost family treasures.
  • Live Concert and Sing-along: Atlanta’s newest up and coming artists will perform silly and heartfelt songs from the GrandCamp Adventures’ music CD.
  • Pictures: Become a meerkat in pictures from the GrandCamp Adventures storybook.
  • Laugh-along Program: Loosen up and laugh with Atlanta’s own Laughter Yoga leaders, Celeste Greene and Jean Woodall.
  • Free Giveaways and Prizes: Win T-shirts, hats, buttons, CDs and GrandCamp Adventures first storybook, “Here We Go!” and more.
     

GrandCamp Adventures, launching November 1st, is a company for a new generation of grandparents and grandkids who want to connect deeper, have more fun together and generate memories that will last a lifetime.

Folklife Festival

Join the Atlanta History Center for the Folk Life Festival. Spend the day enjoying the fall weather while meeting artists and learning about foodways that have shaped modern day Georgia.
 
Mingle with local artists as they demonstrate their craft through music, pottery, weaving, quilting, and woodworking.  At the History Center’s Tullie Smith Farm enjoy hands-on activities and living history presentations. Inside the museum, take a guided tour of the Atlanta History Center’s Shaping Traditions exhibition and discover how folk art has changed over generations in the South. Activities include:

• Traditional country fiddle music by Rosin Sisters
• Ongoing demonstrations by woodworkers, potters, cloth weaver, sweet grass basket weaver, spinner, blacksmith, and quilters.
• Ongoing activities demonstrate and explore what GA farmers would have been doing to prepare for the winter with goings-on such as pickling, open-hearth cooking, and processing cotton from picking to dyeing.
• Kids will especially enjoy hands-on folk arts activities such as pottery, traditional uses for cotton, pickling, listening to old fashioned stories by storyteller, and playing traditional games.

This program is included in the price of general Atlanta History Center admission.

OCTOBER 


Day of the Dead – Dia de Muertos

Enjoy a day of cultural exploration at the Atlanta History Center! Smiling faces, swirling brilliant colors, elaborately decorated altars, storytelling, and authentic Mexican food and music are just a handful of things that visitors see during the annual program, Day of the Dead or Dia de Muertos.

The ancient festival is rooted in Mexican heritage and serves as a way for families to remember their deceased loved ones and to celebrate their children and the continuity of life.

 A Celebration of Lincoln's Life and Legacy: Exhibition Closing Weekend

Join the Atlanta History Center for closing weekend of our temporary exhibit With Malice Toward None: Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition.

During this special weekend celebration, experience what Lincoln’s life meant for the United States of America and the legacy he left behind through living history performances and hands-on activities. Learn about the implications of Lincoln’s presidency and how it continues to affect our lives today.

Saturday’s special program showcases Lincoln’s early life and career, and the war that plagued his presidency.  Visitors discover how Lincoln affected Atlanta and the battles that may have been fought in your backyard. 

Sunday’s special program allows visitors to learn about Lincoln’s legacy by first following his funeral procession and experiencing the country’s grief over his death.  Then follow the road that Lincoln paved from the Civil War to Civil Rights.

Dancing Through Time: USO

Take a few steps back in time with the Atlanta History Center during Dancing Through Time: USO.

The entire family will enjoy learning about the history, importance, and changes of the USO through the years while participating in dance clinics, hands on activities, watching a film, listening to music, and interacting with living history interpreters.

This program is free with the price of general Atlanta History Center admission. Visitors may receive a $5 off admission discount when they donate a $10 phone card to support the Atlanta History Center’s fostered military unit, the Skymasters, serving in Afghanistan. Grab your family and friends and enjoy one of Atlanta’s classic holiday offerings! Escape the hustle and bustle of the holiday season while you enjoy the winter landscape of the History Center’s 33 acre Buckhead campus at dusk as beautiful candlelit paths illuminate gardens, trails, and historic homes with holiday cheer.

Admission is $10 for Atlanta History Center adult members, $5 for member children; $15 for nonmember adults, $7 nonmember children. Reservations are recommended. For more information about this program, please contact 404.814.4000.
