In celebration of the opening of With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition, see Lincoln come to life through living history performances, enjoy storytelling, hear excerpts of some of Lincoln’s most popular speeches, and experience musical styles that were prominent during this time. A variety of hands-on activities and arts and crafts provide younger visitors with a broader understanding of Abraham Lincoln’s life and the times during which he lived. Scheduled Activities: Songs and Stories of the Civil War Dressed as a 19th-century performer using period musical instruments, Bobby explores the stories of both the North and South through the music they loved. Each song is placed in context with historical background and portrays the struggles, hopes, and fears of Americans during the long and bloody conflict. Bull Run – Manassas Play Explore the beginning of our nation’s Civil War through a two-actor performance that portrays the lives, stories, and experiences of individuals from both the North and South. Based on diaries, letters, and other true accounts, the first battle of the war comes to life with characters that include Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, General Irvin McDowell, Varina Davis, Rose Greenhow, Union and Confederate soldiers, and their families. Abraham Lincoln Speeches Lincoln – Douglas Debate Hear excerpts from the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates from the Illinois senate race of 1858, performed by Ken Johnston and Bran Peacock. Storytellers Tullie Smith Farm House Tours 1860s Civilian Dancers The 1860s Civilian Society of Georgia is a family-oriented group of gentlemen, ladies, and children dedicated to vintage dance and to creating refined citizen impressions in the world of mid-1800s living history. Here we go! A fun-filled day for families, grandparents, and kids! GrandCamp Adventures is hosting a day of special activities from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Atlanta History Center to make this year’s Grandparent’s Day, Sunday, September 12th, something to remember. The Atlanta History Center is offering one free youth ticket for every paid adult so everyone can come and participate in this wonderful event. A Celebration of Lincoln's Life and Legacy: Exhibition Closing Weekend Join the Atlanta History Center for closing weekend of our temporary exhibit With Malice Toward None: Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition. During this special weekend celebration, experience what Lincoln’s life meant for the United States of America and the legacy he left behind through living history performances and hands-on activities. Learn about the implications of Lincoln’s presidency and how it continues to affect our lives today. Saturday’s special program showcases Lincoln’s early life and career, and the war that plagued his presidency. Visitors discover how Lincoln affected Atlanta and the battles that may have been fought in your backyard. Sunday’s special program allows visitors to learn about Lincoln’s legacy by first following his funeral procession and experiencing the country’s grief over his death. Then follow the road that Lincoln paved from the Civil War to Civil Rights. Programs are free with the price of general Atlanta History Center admission. The entire family will enjoy learning about the history, importance, and changes of the USO through the years while participating in dance clinics, hands on activities, watching a film, listening to music, and interacting with living history interpreters. Visitors may receive a $5 off admission discount when they donate a $10 phone card to support the Atlanta History Center’s fostered military unit, the Skymasters, serving in Afghanistan.
