Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones
While dozens of athletes excelled in the 1920s and 1930s, none captured the public imagination like Robert Tyre “Bobby” Jones, Jr. From 1923 to 1930, he won thirteen major tournaments, popularized golf on the international stage, and called singular attention to the game’s best traditions. President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said of his friend: “Those who have been fortunate enough to know Bob Jones realize that his fame as a golfer is transcended by his inestimable qualities as a human being.” Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones is the largest display focused on the man considered the most important golfer in the history of the game. The award-winning exhibition includes photographs and personal artifacts that follow Jones’ life, his record tournament wins, his family life, his determination to create the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, and his life-long dedication to the game.
The exhibition also highlights the game of golf from its early history to the modern era. Featured items include eighteenth-century clubs, rule books from St. Andrews, early feathery and gutta percha balls, replicas of Jones’ four Grand Slam trophies, medals from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, and one of the coveted Master's Tournament green jackets worn by Atlanta golfer Charlie Yates. It also includes artifacts revealing changes to the game after World War II, including the inclusion of female, professional, African American, and junior golfers who benefitted from the growth of the game that resulted from Jones’ popularity. |
