Civil War to Civil Rights
Two of our nation’s turning points are linked in the history of Atlanta: the road to freedom that began with Abraham Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Civil War and the path toward social justice that led to the American Civil Rights Movement. In recognition of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth and the 50th anniversary of the Atlanta Student Movement, the Atlanta History Center presents Civil War to Civil Rights – a series of exhibitions and programming that explores our American history from the 1860s through the 1960s. The exhibitions featured in the Civil War to Civil Rights series are Let Your Motto Be Resistance: African American Portraits (January 30 – April 25, 2010), Voices Across the Color Line: The Atlanta Student Movement 50th Anniversary (March 15 – September 25, 2010), With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition (September 4 – November 6, 2010), and Turning Point: The American Civil War (Atlanta History Center signature exhibition). Each exhibition and accompanying programming explores the philosophies, historical figures, and activism that led the United States from Civil War to civil rights. Civil War to Civil Rights is presented by the Scott Hudgens Family Foundation, Georgia Power, and Macy’s.
