Sidney Isenberg Lecture Series Presents: A Keynote Lecture and Remembrance for Dr. Sidney Isenberg, 1921-2011

Tuesday, May 08, 2012   8:00 PM

Atlanta lost one of its beloved citizens on August 15, 2011, with the passing of Dr. Sidney Isenberg.  Though Dr. Isenberg was a private individual, we know many stories that suggest his influence on some of Atlanta's prominent figures – though we may never really know the extent of that impact.  The Isenberg Lecture Series is proud to have Dr. Clifford M. Kuhn remind us of the role our city played in those momentous years.

“Of Kennedys and King: Martin Luther King's Atlanta Arrest and the 1960 Presidential Election”

In October 1960, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested when he joined students protesting segregated eating facilities in downtown Atlanta.  King’s arrest had a significant impact on the 1960 presidential race, and numerous participants claimed credit for its helping to elect John F. Kennedy.  As we move into another election year, historian Dr. Clifford M. Kuhn examines the episode and its often contested memory.
